13th Century Farmhouse with Pool

Pujols near Villeneuve-sur-Lot, France

4 bedrooms, sleeps 8

Mothis

This secluded yet easily accessible stone farmhouse, believed to originally date from the 13th century, is approached via a ½ km private drive.

Mothis surrounded by sunflowers

"Mothis" is set in prune groves and woodland with panoramic views across the Vallee du Mail towards the medieval Bastide town of Pujols (home to the much accredited Michelin restaurant LA TOQUE BLANCHE). The Vallee du Mail chosen by the Knights Templars for its ‘tranquillity’ is in a region that offers spectacular countryside and a wealth of history. Pujols itself was a 13th century Cathar stronghold.  Bergerac 45 minutes, Bordeaux and Toulouse 90 minutes.

Built of local stone ‘Mothis’ is deceptively spacious and features an abundance of character - original beams, open fire fireplaces and timber or tiled floors on a number of different levels. The thick stone walls afford coolness inside the house during the hot summer weather. Open fires and central heating provide comfort during the winter season.

Pujols le Haut is one of the "plus beaux villages de France". It is perched 200mtrs upon a rocky ridge overlooking the Lot valley with Villeneuve to the North and 'Mothis' to the south. Although inhabited since prehistoric times and a Roman stronghold (Pujols comes from the Latin ‘Podium’) – the Pujols seen today is in essence 13th-14th century with its neo-gothic church, Colombage houses and remains of the Chateau and ramparts.

Villeneuve-sur-lot (4km) is a large ancient market town on the river in the heart of the valley of the Lot. There are some excellent restaurants and cafes, shops of all types, banks and theatre etc. On Tuesday and Saturday mornings there is held a farmers market with various produce of the region including local prunes and foie gras. Villeneuve also has the largest organic market outside Paris.

Penne d’Agenais A Bastide town. The Duke of Guyenne, better known as Richard the Lionheart, who became Richard 1st of England built his strongly fortified castle here next to the Chapel of Our Blessed Lady. On the site now stands a beautiful basilica of ‘Notre Dame de Payragude’ – well worth a visit. Excellent restaurants.

Temple sur Lot, Casseneuil, Monflanquin, Tournon d’Agenais, Prayssas, Castelmoron, to name but a few of the many other bastide and historic towns which lie in very close proximity to Pujols.
